Connective  Tissue Massage

History of connective tissue massage

The connective tissue massage is developed thanks to Mrs.

Elisabeth Dicke, an expert in medical gymnastics, forced to bed due to severe circulatory problems in her leg.

Amputation was proposed.

So Dicke began to massage the areas where the skin seemed harder and thicker, especially at the level of the sacrum. Traction after traction, he began to feel the circulation in his leg again. He reduced the pain, recovered the correct temperature and after almost a year of the terrible therapeutic proposal, he obtained complete recovery.

Through what would become connective tissue massage, Dicke intuited and then demonstrated the links between organ disorders and certain skin alterations. He discovered that through the mechanical stimulus exerted by specific maneuvers and tractions, on certain areas of the skin and subcutaneous connective tissue, it was possible to cause a reflex nerve reaction.

This reaction was able to reduce or eliminate functional disorders of internal organs and structures of the musculoskeletal system: he had discovered the reflexes between the skin and the viscera, so as to be able to influence their health.

The technique of connective tissue massage

Connective tissue massage is one of the manual techniques that can treat connective tissue disorders.

It connects, nourishes and protects every part of the body.

The connective tissue massage technique is characterized by a sliding of the skin on its support, operating a stimulating traction on the subcutaneous and interstitial connective tissue.

In this way, reflexes are generated that improve the state of health: through the reflexes of the organs connected to it and through the muscular structures, the tendons connected to it. Manipulation is not done using the whole hand.

The manual execution of the therapist takes place almost exclusively by means of the index-middle or middle-ring fingers. In some particular cases it is also possible to use the forearms or elbows.

The connective tissue massage is also known as "connective reflexogen" because it also acts reflexively, rebalancing, through stimulation of specific areas of the skin, known as dermatomes, areas whose existence is anatomically and scientifically proven. The purpose of the connective tissue massage is to stimulate a specific area of the body in order to obtain a beneficial effect both locally (if needed), and reflected on visceral functions or organs placed in depth, even in locations distant from that in which the massage is actually practiced.

Benefits of reflexogenic connective tissue massage

The action of the connective tissue massage has numerous beneficial effects, not only on the specific point but, as mentioned, indirectly also on the rest of the body.

Among the major benefits we find: the reactivation of circulation decontraction and relaxation of the tissues greater joint mobility a "detachment" of the tissue from the muscle with the result of dissolving tensions.

The stimulus exerted on the skin acts reflexively on both the smooth and skeletal muscles, therefore important analgesic and decontracting effects are induced that can help to overcome various orthopedic or rheumatological problems.

Normally the connective tissue massage is also combined with gymnastic exercises and nutritional advice.

Contraindications of connective tissue massage The connective tissue massage cannot be practiced on any individual and in any situation but has some contraindications when, for example, we are in the presence of some acute pathologies, infections, serious heart problems, recent strokes, tumors, fever.

Often and willingly, the connective tissue massage is practiced on painful and inflamed areas as a therapeutic massage.

Curiosity

In some cases, receiving a connective tissue massage we may experience sweating, palpitations, profound drowsiness or intense relaxation. These are neurological reactions expected and linked to normal reactions of the autonomic system.

A masseur who uses this technique must necessarily know the relationships between skin areas, innervation and internal organ pathologies.

The connective tissue massage must therefore only be performed by professional therapists who have a thorough knowledge of the manipulation techniques that characterize it and who work in serious and qualified structures.
